I've been trying to find a chart that lists the year of manufacture for the vin numbers. All the ones I find are for the 17 digit numbers, and mine is a 7 digit number. It is a "bitsa" R-65.
Can anybody steer me in the right direction?

Thanks Jerry

Thanks, but that site only recognizes the 17 digit numbers.

Thanks Kurt,

I can't find any numbers that start with a W. I know George bought the bike from some friends in Georgia, so who knows what parts they had. I think it is an R-65.
The first numbers are W381***.

CZ - For the link I gave you,

For the link I gave you, use only the last 7 digits. That works for any 1970-1995 Airhead. Snowbum has some discussion of the 17 digit number here:

http://bmwmotorcycletech.info/IDnumbrs.htm

You started out talking about a bitsa R65. The above will work for that. If you're talking about an R69, pre 1970, there is no online look up for that. Only two things can be done. Type the last 6 digits (or 7 for the R60/2 where they started with 18xxxxx) in the boxes on the left. That takes you to a page which represents that model. At the bottom is a slightly outdated PDF file where I've been compiling engine/frame numbers against model years and build dates as supplied by owners.

The other thing for a pre 1970 bike is to send an email to BMW Archives and ask them for the info they have in their records.
