Just pulled the gearbox apart in my new (to me) R69S and the Kickstarter gear is a bit worn/damaged. I have been reading articles about this all night and I have seen info that says mine is not worn that bad and other articles that say that it should be replaced. Please see the pictures attached.

I figured I would reach out to the forum to see what you think as I am sure several people here have seen these more than once. Should it be replaced?

Guidance and opinions are very much appreciated!!!

Thanks!!!

James

I would go with what Duane Ausherman has on his site.

The first picture of the segment gear looks almost exactly like yours. He says that still has some service. It seems that when the second tooth begins to get cut down or broken, then that's not good.

The Barrington Manual suggests the same...first tooth damage is still OK although the starter can get locked if it hits just right. Manual also says Bench Mark Works sells parts for this.

If I had it this far apart, I think I'd go ahead and get a new one. Locking of the kick lever is about the only down side, but it will continue to bother you. Easy to release a locked kick gear - just put the bike in gear and rock it back or forward. But not right and a PITA.

Occasionally, I'll find a locked condition on the kick start. I just pull in the clutch lever, give the kicker another pass through, and then find that the kick start will reengage just fine.

Replace now

The time to replace worn out parts is when the gearbox is apart. Unless you are on a shoe-string budget, I'd get the correct replacement part and do it right the first time. If you don't, you'll likely regret it later.
