1968 R60/2. Frame up restoration 2016

I noticed my /2 "wondering" more than usual while riding straight down the road. Apparently the swing arm pins had loosened and the swing arm had moved more to one side than the other.

According to Barrington the swing arm pins should be torqued to 15' lbs (to seat the bearings) then re-torqued to around 7-8' lbs. The locking nut torqued to something around 80-85' lbs.

There is no wiggle/movement in the swing arm (on the lift) but there is still a little wondering going down the road. Is there any chance I damaged the bearings in the swing arm? Would it be ok to torque the pins up closer to 15' lbs and leave it?

I have new wheel bearings in the rear and the front is solid as a rock. When I re-torqued the swing arm the wondering improved greatly but its not like it was before or after the rebuild.

Suggestions? Comments?
thanks
chuck

Interesting... What do

Interesting... What do you suppose your bike is wondering about? I occasionally find myself wondering about this or that while riding my bikes but never gave much thought to what they might be wondering about. Good stuff.

Swingarm Bearings

The swing arm bearings don't need a "tight" torque. The initial torque is to make sure everything is "home", then you back it off and only tighten it to where the bearings are not overloaded. If the bearings are overloaded, the suspension will stiffen and the bearings will wear quickly.

If your bike is "wandering", I would start with checking the tire pressures, next the steering head bearings (stiff or self centering).

bearings

Pokie ......
Thanks for the follow up. The last time I torqued the bearings it was around 11' lbs. With all the rain I have not been able to test ride the bike again. I will keep you posted.

Slash2......
Thanks for your input as well. Smile. I was wondering how long it would take for someone to notice.
