I have a R60/2 (1969) and am in the middle of installing the complete system - see

http://www.powerdynamo.biz/eng/systems/7080/70804main.htm

I am uneasy about the electronic advance unit settings. I know that originally the advance mechanism started to advance at 9 degrees BTDC at idling rpm and finished up at 30 degrees at 5,800 rpm (plus or minus 2 degrees).

MZ-B fitting instructions give just two alternative settings for their electronic advance unit.

CHOICE A
1/3 on, 2/4 off. This setting will start the increase at 4 degrees BTDC at idling revs and increase to 34 degrees at 2,500 rpm, finishing the increase at 40 degrees at 3,500.

CHOICE B
2/3 on, 1/4 off. This setting activates advance at 5 degree BTDC and ends advance at 40 degrees at 3,000 rpm. If the engine gets over 8,500 rpm it will shut down the ignition! (motor would have disintegrated by now anyway)

Neither of these options bear much relation to the original advance parameters – is it efficient to have no advance at all after 3,000 or 3,500 rpm?

Any feedback from members who have successfully installed this MZ-B product would be appreciated.

MZ-B Powerdynamo & electronic ignition system

I fitted the complete system and motor fired first kick. I used choice one settings and power curve seems perfect. Actual installation was relatively easy. Have a brand new charging system with an electronic ignition system giving a 40,000 volt (old system maximum 10,000 volt) spark gives me peace of mind on my 'Balades' in the Pyrenees and Alps.

Bear in mind:
1)Before ordering check the diameter of crank-end taper - there are two sizes 17 & 20 mm. There is no hard and fast information on which size your crank end is. Despite giving full details to MZ-B of my 1969 12 volt bike the factory sent the 17mm rotor - it seems the larger taper was introduced around 1964.
2) Positioning the regulator underneath the petrol (gas) tank can take some time.
3) If your head and tail light do not work then you have inadvertantly removed an earth lead.
4) Buy the extractor tool for the new rotor, crucial.
5) For those purists worried that any parts of this system can be seen - they cannot. No-one will know, without peeking up from below the tank, that you have an electronic system.
6) Setting up the timing with a stroboscope is NOT straightforward - any member needing more info on this - post a message.
7) Quality of all the components is outstanding and well worth the money.
Cool If you are really stuck there are two guys in Berlin who speak excellent English. See http://www.mz-b.de/efone.htm

On this /2, fitting the regulator also took a lot of work:

The system is adjusted for

The system is adjusted for full advance at high speed....38 degrees total...and then when it idles back down it will show near the S mark...(that is already 9 degrees)...and that allows it to perform well at idle...and also at full rpm without pinging...

The regulator mounting plate used to be included with the kits.... and no longer are...
I am going to have them made up and will include them with any kits that come from me...I am also including several clamp spacers for the bar clamps... I am setting up a new website where I will show step-by-step how to install the system..
I am now importing the kits in volume and can save at least $100 per kit in shipping.
I also stock a large supply of spare parts.
