I have a Wixom fairing that was on my bike before I bought it. I have the fairing and want to know if anyone has any olf mounting insructions or pictures of the fairing correctly mounted.

My bike is a 1971 R75/5.

Cheers

Wixom Fairing Help

Bill -

Hmmm...I thought I posted something yesterday...weird...

Is this the fork-mounted fairing something like this:

This mounts to my /2 using two flat pieces of aluminum that come off the top caps on the forks. For the bottom two mounts, there's an angled piece of metal with connects to the top of each shock mount and then uses a bolt through the bottom corners of the fairing.

I would think it would mount similar on a /5.

Wixom Fairing Help

If you could take a picture of the mountings that woudl be really helpful.

The fairing has two sets of brackets on it and sounds like wwhat you descibed.

How is it to reach and use the key (start-lights-parking lights--removal?)

Wixom Fairing Help

I'll take some pictures later today. Getting to the key is not too difficult, but it is up under the fairing. Obviously, you know where the slide is and it's just a matter of using two hands to open the slide and find the hole the "nail" goes into.

I have two bikes, the /2 and a /7. The /7 has a frame-mounted fairing, a Luftmeister. I like that fairing a lot. Some say that the fork-mounted fairings can be dangerous in that wind forces can cause problems or possibly accentuate any irregularities in the suspension. I suppose that's true, but I've not noticed that on my /2. I've ridden with the fairing on and off, and the stability of the bike is the same. Sure a strong gust of side wind can create havoc, but that can also affect any bike.

I took the /2 on a two-day trip recently and had no problems. I'm not a naked bike rider...I know that for a fact. I will always have a fairing on my bikes.

Wixom Fairing Help

Here are some pictures of the mounting on my /2:

The top mount...simple flat bars from the fork caps out to the embedded brackets inside the fairing.

The bottom mount...a couple of angles that nest to allow some adjustment. There's rubber washers to protect the fairing.

And a general shot of the two mountings.

Hope that helps.

fairing Date

I have always wondered when this fairing came out? I have one that came off a 71 50/5 model, and I see its on a much older bike.

thanks
Jim

I had a new R69S in 1967, and

I had a new R69S in 1967, and at the time, I think the Flanders fairing had just become available. Some time later, the Wixom appeared, and it was much nicer looking. Both of them act like sails in some wind conditions. For a very brief time, maybe a year or two, in 1969 or 1970, the frame-mounted Vetter Windjammer III was available for the Earles fork bikes. By the time I could afford one, they were out of production. Recently, I snagged one on ebay and I now have it on my present R69S and really like it. It is very stable and does an excellent job of controlling buffeting. I also make good use of the big storage pockets.

Any Windjammer III or early Luftmeister will work on a /2 if you can find the mounting brackets. I have two sets of these brackets and would be willing to loan one set out if someone has the metal skills to make a duplicate.

You can see the Vetter on my bike in the last photo in the gallery called "Jon's Survivor." The Luftmeister was a pirate copy of the Vetter (according to Craig Vetter). It is virtually identical, and uses the same brackets as the Vetter. It's a little better looking because it incorporates the turn signals into the fairing itself, rather than mounting them on stems outside the fairing.
