Just bought a 1969 R69US which has a bit of a sticking slide in the carby. I have realised that the the ring holding the top of the cap for the slide is not threaded (as my manual shows!!), do these just tap off??
Thanks Guys
Dominic

Dominic - I've not heard of

Dominic -

I've not heard of such a thing. Possibly it is not a Bing carb? Any chance you could take a picture? Does it look like the carb shown on the left of this web page?

R69S Carby

Kurt,
Thanks for your response, yes the carby is a Bing same as link. In the exploded views link (T-77, T-115,T-116) has a note in regard to lever top carbs & the holding ring on these has a differnt part No. I though there could be something in that or maybe they are a differnt part No because the diameter is differnt? If I try to unscew the top of the carby cap it will move about 1mm & no more which also makes me think it has a locating slot/key & no thread.
thanks
Dominic

My R69S has the T-120 type

My R69S has the T-120 type carbs. I thought all the R69S/US models would have had these carbs. The top of the carb is really two pieces, one is the ring which has the grooves on the outside to give a better grip. The actual top, where the cable goes in, is indeed keyed to the cylinder of the carb, but that is just to ensure that the top stays in a specific location as the ring is tightened to the cylinder of the carb.

The carbs are made of pot metal. It's possible that the metal has galled and it will not turn. I'd suggest you get in touch with Bing and ask them about your situation and get some suggestions from them as to how to proceed. Possibly soaking with a good penetrant such as AeroKroil might be helpful. But Bing will know for sure.

R69S

Yeah, I might have to speak to Bing. I have been running some penetrating oil along the top of the ring. It feels to me the ring has the movement, not the carby top, Ill have another look tonight.
Regards

R69S Carby

Kurt
Bing suggested running some WD40 into it & if that didnt work put some heat onto it. I wasnt keen to heat them so I just placed a Rag over the top & cracked then with some multigrips, no worries. It wasnt the side either, some cable issue which was stopping the return.
Thanks
Dominic
