1. Is there some sort of trick to removing the rear shocks? The aluminum nut turns quite nicely but so does the shock stud inside the tube. 2. Where do I find the thumb screw and some related pieces for the steering damper? 3. I need to paint the motorcycle as the battery left some nasty scars. I had some paint mixed for Dover White but it looks a little too yellow for me. How do I get the original color recipe? I'm just getting started on this so there will be more questions.
Are you having trouble with the cap itself? Here was the previous thread that I remembered:

If not, what part of this figure is the issue:

Some ideas...
Shocks - someone was having a similar problem on an R26 as I recall...I'll see if I can find those previous posts.
Steering damper - I would check with Vech at Benchmark Works, http://www.benchmarkworks.com. As far as I know the stock hydraulic damper is no longer available, but you can adapt the friction damper. I still have the hydraulic damper on my R69S but I know that it is shot. It's just there for completeness. If the bike is set up right you don't need the damper, unless you've got a sidecar or you're running slow speeds over a rutty road. Use of a damper to cover up a handling problem is not the way to go.
Paint - Jeff Dean has immaculate bikes and also owns a repainted Dover White R60/2:

He says "In modern terms, the Dover white paint color is GM paint code #059, 1980 General Motors frost beige (PPG #3087)."
