Is it just me or is the Resource Links tool impossible to understand. Is less than, does not equal, is not, is...all these existential declarations make absolutely no sense to me. Couldn't we just have a list of resource categories (mechanic, vendor, etc) and then search by location or something? I just don't get how it is supposed to help.
I just made a change to the way the Resource Links page comes up. Now Contains and Is All Of are the default filters that come up. You need only type in a name or Ctrl+Click a selection of categories to get the most useful operations.
Is that good enough, or should I just remove the filter choices altogether?
I am open to whatever will make the site more useful to you all (but doesn't require me to hack up working code that will be a problem later on when the site needs to be updated).
If you are using a business that you'd like to recommend, please forward it along with contact details and we can add them to our page. Just use the Contact Us! button on the left sidebar and select Website Feedback as the category.

...and I'm the one who built it. There are certain tools provided by the software our site is using. They are powerful, but they use programmer speak. I can reprogram the page to remove either of the filters so that the choices are fewer, but that would eliminate some choices that are be useful.
When I go looking for a resource, I do one of two things.
If I know what I'm looking for, like a particular business or a very specific service, then I just type it into the search box on the upper left of any page. This will bring up a list that will include the resource links and might also bring up forum posts that are relevant. That could be useful, but it also means hunting through more things that might not be relevant.
If I'm looking for a list of businesses that do a particular kind of job or sell parts for a particular bike, then I do the following: visit the resource links page; select "Is All Of" under the Tags heading, and then Ctrl+Click as many of the category types as is appropriate for my search. This will bring up a list -- and a map! -- with only businesses that meet all of the criteria. For example, if you need your speedometer overhauled on your /2, then choose Is All Of and Services (eg, they do work), "/2" Bikes and Instruments/Controls. Then click the Apply button. Right now, this filter will select ten businesses that can get this work done for you.
If you're trying to remember the name of a business that perhaps you dealt with long ago and want to contact again, use the filter under resource name instead. You can select the Contains filter under the Resource Name heading and type in the part of the name you remember, for example, and you'll see all of the firms we know about that have that in their names.
If everyone feels that supplying only a Contains filter for the Resource Name and an Is All Of filter for the Tags is sufficient, I can reprogram the links page to remove the filter choices altogether and that would certainly simplify things.
